Find the right school for you
If you have been considering a career as a neonatal nurse practitioner in Idaho, your first step is to obtain the appropriate level of education. Careers in this profession require that you to have a Master’s of Science in Nursing or doctorate degree along with registered nurse status. Because you will be working with newborns, you will also need to obtain certification in neonatal resuscitation and neonatal intensive care nursing.
The Master’s of Science in Nursing degree is often completed through the Advanced Practice Neonatal Nursing (APNN) program, a program which takes students to the next level of nursing by focusing predominantly on the practitioner aspect of healthcare. Of note, you will be required to complete some intern-based clinical time prior to graduation. One of the benefits of this program is that you can complete it entirely online. This option is especially helpful to nurses who are already working full-time and interested in further their careers.
In Idaho, neonatal nurse practitioners are required to hold state licensure from the Idaho State Board of Nursing. In order to obtain licensure, however; you will need to obtain certification by passing the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses, otherwise known as the NCLEX.
