Neonatal nurse practitioner programs in Michigan prepare individuals to practically apply their knowledge in neonatal centers, in newborn nurseries, intermediate care nurseries and neonatal intensive care nurseries.  In their graduate studies, individuals will deepen their understanding of this specialty area through coursework in subject matter such as embryology, neonatal physiology and pharmacology.  In addition, emphases will be placed on evidence-based practice, developmental care and pain management. Classes prepare nurses for work with babies from birth through the first two years. Textbook studies are generally complemented by clinical experiences that provide the opportunity for on-site learning.

Graduates of Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs must be licensed by the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDHC) and may apply for nurse practitioner specialty certification through MDCH.  In addition, they are eligible to sit for the national neonatal intensive care nursing certification examination.

Administered by the National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties (NCC), this examination requires test takers to be licensed and have at least two years of experience with a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical work under their belts.  Questions assess neonatal nurse practitioners’ knowledge of diagnostic procedures, family integration, nutrition and the disease process to verify their competencies.
