Admission to a neonatal nurse practitioner program requires that individuals first earn an undergraduate degree, typically in either nursing or some type of health care program.  Once they enroll in graduate studies for their Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree, individuals will engage in coursework that will deepen their knowledge of embryology, pharmacology and family dynamics.  They also study pain management and developmental care among other subject matter.  To further enhance students’ understanding of what they will encounter as professionals on-the-job, neonatal nurse practitioner programs include an experiential learning opportunity in medical settings.

Once they have completed their education, graduates of these nurse practitioner programs can seek licensure through the Missouri Division of Professional Registration if they are not already licensed in the state.  Moreover, once they acquire their licenses, some may choose to pursue national neonatal intensive care nursing certification through the National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties (NCC).  Earning certification requires a passing score on an examination that assesses competencies in diagnostic procedures, nutrition and other core concepts.  To qualify to take this examination, test takers must possess at least 2,000 hours of experience gained over at least two years.
