Neonatal nurse practitioner programs in Montana strengthen students’ understanding of medicine as it relates to the care and treatment of babies with chronic medical conditions.  Coursework for this graduate nursing degree combines textbook studies with real-world experience.

Students will have classes that explore topics such as neonatal physiology, embryology and pharmacology as well as courses that will help them to better understand the needs of babies’ families and how best to meet them.  So that students are prepared for the kinds of situations they will encounter once they enter the profession full-time, these nursing programs require participation in field experience activities.

The Montana Department of Labor and Industry awards licenses to nursing professionals once they have completed their degree programs.  Earning an advanced degree in the specialty also enables nurses to be recognized as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) in the state as well as helps to qualify them to take the National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties’ (NCC) national neonatal intensive care nursing certification examination.

In addition to holding a license, test takers must have two years of relevant work experience and 2,000 hours in-service.  The test, which is offered both on the computer and with traditional paper and pencil, assesses nurses’ competencies in subject matter like diagnosis, family integration and nutrition.
