Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program in New Hampshire - NH

The neonatal nurse practitioner license program in New Hampshire varies slightly from that of neighboring states.  New Hampshire requires both a registered nursing license and advanced practice registered nursing license (APRN) for all practicing nurse practitioners. In order to maintain a valid license in New Hampshire, advanced practice registered nurses, otherwise known as nurse practitioners, must gain national certification from one of six national agencies.

For neonatal nurse practitioners, this organization would be the National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties.  In order to maintain certification, nurses must either submit to re-examination or complete continuing education.  Neonatal nurse practitioners must complete 30 hours of CE for their RN license, plus 30 additional hours in neonatology, five of which must be dedicated to pharmacology. In addition, to be considered “active in practice,” nurse practitioners must have 400 hours in active practice in their specialty within the four years immediately preceding license.

No in-state education programs currently exist for nurses who wish to become neonatal nurse practitioners, although The New Hampshire Perinatal Program has an extensive network of continuing education programs for nurses and doctors.  This program contributes to New Hampshire having one of the lowest perinatal mortality rates in the country. Despite the lack of in-state education opportunities, with only 1,376 current active nurse practitioner licenses in the state in all specialties, New Hampshire definitely has opportunities for those looking for careers as neonatal nurse practitioners.
