Once you have completed your training through a Nevada medical assistant school, you will want to pass the CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) Certification Examination offered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Applicants must fill out a form, send coursework transcripts, and pay the appropriate charges. All components of the application must be completed and submitted approximately four months before the preferred exam date. Candidates will schedule and take the examination at a Prometric Test Center in their area (www.prometric.com). There is a center in Reno, although candidates in the eastern and southern parts of Nevada may find it more convenient to take the exam at the St. George, Utah site. Candidates are allowed three hours to complete the computer-based exam. Unofficial results are available immediately; official results are mailed 10-12 weeks after the exam.

Certification of credentials is also sent after successful completion of the examination. If candidates fail to pass the test, they can re-take it as soon as is convenient by re-submitting the application and test fee.

Recertify every five years either by taking the CMA (AAMA) Recertification Examination or by earning at least 60 continuing education units. Thirty of the continuing education units must meet AAMA requirements. Ten units must cover each of the following topics: administrative issues, clinical issues, and general topics. The remaining units can be any combination of the categories. Fees for recertification are $125 for the exam and $65 for continuing education units for AAMA members; nonmembers will pay $250 to take the exam and $130 for continuing education units. Take the first step and begin gathering information about medical assistant schools in Nevada.
