Though it is not required to continue your education after receiving the initial AA degree or certificate, it is highly recommended to keep up to date with the latest medical and technological information as it is updated. It is also recommended that one take the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) certification exam after working in the field for two years. The exam costs $10 and when passed, will allow a transcriptionist to put CMT (certified medical transcriptionist) after their name. The certificate expires every three years and required 30 units of continuing education to be renewed. Classes in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, English skills, and keyboarding can be taken for the continuing education units. Receiving the AHDI certification allows for higher wages and better job prospects.
