The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is the agency that is responsible for establishing the criteria for nursing informatics certification and continuing education requirements. Candidates for the certification examination must have met the necessary education requirements (registered nurse and Bachelor of Science in nursing), have satisfied the Nevada state licensing requirements for registered nurses, and have successfully completed the ANCC application process. The exam application is available on the ANCC website at www.nursecredentialing.org/Eligibility/InformaticsNurseEligibility.aspx. Candidates must submit it along with the appropriate fee ($270 for American Nurses Association members, $390 for non-members) and proof that you have met the additional criteria. The additional criteria set forth by the ANCC states that you must have completed a minimum of two (2) years of active, full-time registered nurse (RN) practice, thirty (30) hours of continuing education in the field of nursing informatics, and at least 2000 hours of practical experience in the field (unless you are in the process of or have already completed a master’s degree in nursing informatics program).
Once you have received your appointment for your exam, you will be allowed to sit for the exam and upon receiving notification of a passing score; you will then become certified in the field of nursing informatics in Nevada and be eligible for employment. This certification is valid for five (5) years and will be up for renewal after this time. Certification renewal also carries a fee and verification of completion of the continuing education requirements must also be given.
Since the state of Nevada does not regulate the profession of nursing informatics through licensure (there is no Nevada nursing informatics certification), you will not have to apply for a separate license from the one you currently hold as a registered nurse (RN). You will need to only maintain an active Nevada registered nurse (RN) license and your ANCC certification to continue employment in nursing informatics.
