Diagnostic cardiac sonography involves using diagnostic medical ultrasound waves to acquire and analyze data concerning the heart, its parts and its blood vessels. Cardiac sonographers use a transducer against the patient’s skin. The transducer transmits and receives high frequency sound waves through the body. The sound waves bounce off the body’s structures (in this case, the heart and its parts) and are analyzed by a machine, which then creates images based on those waves. It is a highly skilled profession requiring a great deal of training and, in some cases, national certification by credentialing organizations. While certification is not a state requirement for securing cardiac sonographer jobs in New Hampshire, many hospitals and other employers in the state will only hire certified professionals, or will give preference to certified individuals over those who are not certified.
Cardiac sonographers are employed in both urban and rural areas across New Hampshire, in cities including Manchester, Nashua, East Concord, Concord and Derry Village. Facilities in New Hampshire that employ echocardiographers include Concord Hospital, Wentworth Douglas Hospital, Catholic Medical Center and Cheshire Medical Center. The future is bright for cardiac sonography, with employment expected to increase through the year 2018.
