A Certified Nursing Assistant, called a Licensed Nursing Assistant, or LNA, in the state of New Hampshire, is authorized to perform specific duties to assist nurses but not to handle medications (unless they are licensed to do so). They work under the supervision of a RN, ARNP, or LPN.

LNAs in New Hampshire earn an average salary of $31,000, or about $7000 more annually than their national counterparts make.

Education Required of Certified Nursing Assistants in New Hampshire

Many schools have prerequisites that candidates pass reading and mathematics tests prior to admission. References are often required, as is the ability to lift and move 40 lbs, and possession of  a current CPR certification.

The length of LNA training programs vary. Some are as short as four weeks, others are as long as nine weeks. Programs are given through community and technical schools, nursing facilities, and hospitals. Most community college programs provide 48 hours of classroom instruction, 24 hours of clinical lab and 72 hours of supervised clinical in direct care.  Most New Hampshire CNA training programs are nine weeks long with 146 average hours of instruction. Tuition for programs averages $1200.

Once licensed, LNAs must fulfill continuing education requirements to maintain their license. They must complete 12 contact hours per year including conferences, lectures or other education offerings. These units must enhance nursing assistant knowledge, judgment, and skills. Alternatively, LNAs must take a nursing assistant competency test in two years.  LNAs also have Active in Practice Requirements of 200 hours in the two years immediately preceding the date of application for renewal of their license.
