With an unprecedented number of older Americans, and more reaching senior status every day, those who study aging will be prepared for the jobs that will be created to serve this growing demographic. New Hampshire offers opportunities for students to pursue gerontology degrees at both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science and advanced levels, by either attending a campus-based certificate program, or earning an online certificate in applied gerontology for non-degree students.

Aging studies majors choose one of four concentrations: counseling, health promotion, recreation and leisure, or management and administration. Some of the typical required courses cover introduction to aging studies; biology and aging; aging and social policy; research methods appropriate to study aging; critical health issues and the elderly; the psychology of aging and the sociology of aging or aging and culture.  Useful elective courses for aging studies may be health and aging; memory loss; the long-term care system; counseling the older adult; hearing loss and its affect in the elderly; communication disorders in the aging population; leisure activities for senior citizens; health promotion and nutrition through the life cycle.  Education in diversity is an important part of a gerontology course of study. Courses may cover topics such as multicultural studies, sociology of gender, introduction to world religions, and women in music. Students in New Hampshire are typically expected to complete an internship or practicum as well.
