Education for Massage Therapists in New Hampshire

Massage therapists in the state of New Hampshire must have a minimum of 750 hours of instruction through a New Hampshire massage school or through an online program that complies with the state's curriculum requirements. This must include:

  • 150 hours of Anatomy and Physiology coursework
  • 375 hours of history, theory, practice, benefits, and contraindications of Massage Therapy; related modalities, and other therapies within a massage therapist's scope of practice, including Swedish massage and hydrotherapy
  • 50 hours of training in hygienic and sanitary practices, including blood-borne pathogen standards, and certification in Adult CPR and First Aid
  • 50 hours of education in Health Services Management, business practice, and ethics
  • 125 documented practical hours, which must include:
    • names and address information of each client worked with
    • client notes
    • school log signed by school representative

Distance learning courses may be accepted in lieu of brick-and-mortar massage therapy schools in New Hampshire, as long as the courses were not ones that depend on hands-on experience, the online courses require students to complete a self-assessment quiz before being accepted into the program, specific learning goals for the courses are posted online, and the student has access to faculty and other students through online discussion, virtual classrooms, email, and/or live chat.

In order to be able to renew one's Massage Therapist license, which lasts for two years, one must re-apply, pay the renewal fee of $100, and show documentation of 12 hours of continuing education courses over the preceding 2 years. Continuing education courses must be sponsored by a professional organization that educates massage therapists, sponsored by a post-secondary institution, and taught by an instructor certified by the NCBOT or by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards. Many qualified Continuing Education courses can be found through the American Massage Therapy Association – New Hampshire chapter at www.amta-nh.org.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Massage Therapists in Manchester, Nashua, East Concord, Concord and Derry Village, New Hampshire may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Concord Hospital, Wentworth Douglas Hospital, Catholic Medical Center and Cheshire Medical Center.
