How to Become a Medical Assistant in New Hampshire – NH

The first step to becoming a CMA is to graduate from an accredited medical assistant program in New Hampshire. Approximately 60 percent of Medical Assistants have earned a certificate in medical assisting, while 40 percent have pursued an associate degree in medical assisting. State licensure for medical assistants is not currently required or obtainable in any state. Consequently, medical assistants comprise a small percentage of healthcare providers that are unlicensed. However, additional training may be required to perform certain duties in specific settings or states.

The profession of Medical Assistant is commonly known as one of health care’s most versatile occupations. It is also one of the fastest growing medical careers in the nation. The US Department of Labor is projecting this field to grow 35% over the next 7-8 years meaning the outlook for this profession is excellent. Approximately 1,330 Medical Assistants are employed in the state of New Hampshire.

There are two distinct roles a Medical Assistant may fill: clinical and administrative. The responsibilities of a Clinical Medical Assistant include taking patient history, care and maintenance of patient exam rooms, and the collection of blood and vital signs from patients. As implied by the title, an Administrative Medical Assistant’s duties involve paperwork such as scheduling patients, filing medical records, and billing insurance. Many New Hampshire medical assistant programs offer separate curriculum for these individual classifications.
