Become a Medical Transcriptionist in New Hampshire - NH

New Hampshire Medical Transcription Training Programs

Medical transcriptionists perform an important task in the health care field, as they transcribe reports from physicians and other health care professionals. They must know medical terminology and abbreviations and be able to translate them into expanded format. Medical transcriptionist jobs are available in hospitals and other health care facilities. A majority of medical transcriptionsists work from home. In the state of New Hampshire, medical transcriptionists who work full time can earn from $28,000 to $30,000 annually, depending upon the area in which they work and whether they are registered, certified, or both.

Steps to Become a Medical Transcriptionist in New Hampshire

  1. Earn your high school diploma or GED.
  2. Watch a working medical transcriptionist in action for a period of time. This will give you a better idea of the exact duties of the position and whether or not you would like it.
  3. Try to improve your words per minute typed by taking a class. Classes can be found online or a local community colleges or trade schools. You might also want to take a class to brush up on grammar and punctuation, or review books on the subjects.
  4. Enroll in a certified program for medical transcription training in New Hampshire. Programs are available online and in schools, and must be accredited by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). Upon graduation, you will earn either a certificate or associate degree.
  5. Become a Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT). This is the first step in the hierarchy of Medical Transcriptionist jobs. To become an RMT, you need to take the AHDI's RMT exam. This is given at Thompson Prometric Centers. You must apply to take the exam at www.ahdionline.org/portals/0/downloads/RMTandCMTExamApp.doc . At the time of application, you will be required to pay $10 as an application fee. After receiving an Authorization to Test from AHDI, you will then need to contact Thompson Prometric Test Centers (a list can be found at www.prometric.com/ahdi ) to schedule a place and time to take the exam. The exam must be taken within 90 days of receiving the Authorization to Test. An exam fee of $200 will be due at the testing center on the day of the exam. If you pass the exam, you will immediately be given your RMT credential at the test center. If you do not pass, you will be given a report showing in which areas you need to improve.
  6. After receiving your RMT, you are ready to apply for entry-level jobs as a Registered Medical Transcriptionist.
  7. Once you have worked as a RMT for two years, apply to become certified. While certification is not required in the state of New Hampshire, it is highly recommended. Being a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) will help you get better jobs and command a higher salary than non-certified medical transcriptionists.  To become a CMT, you will need to take and pass the national exam given by the American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT) .  Applications are available at the AHDI's website link above. Again, a fee of $10 will be paid at the time of the application, and a $275 fee is due at the Thompson Prometric Center on the day of the exam.
  8. You will need to renew your certification and registration every three years and fulfill continuing education requirements to maintain certification and registration.
