Education Requirements for Public Health Professionals in New Hampshire
Graduating from New Hampshire public health schools allows students to sit for the national certification exam and use the Certified in Public Health (CPH) credential after his/her name. It will take four (4) years to complete one of these programs. While this is the only required degree for a public health professional in New Hampshire, students are encouraged to complete a master’s degree or beyond (a doctorate degree) to further their education and increase their marketability in the field.
Both of the universities in New Jersey that offer bachelor’s degree programs also offer masters and doctorate programs to public health students. Classroom instruction is expanded from the bachelor’s degree level and other practical experiences are offered, including teaching positions and research assistant opportunities.
Courses one can expect to take during the above degree programs include: Bachelor’s Degree: Introduction to Public Health, Epidemiology and Community Medicine, Human Behavior and Public Health, Health Issues Seminars, Health Ethics and Law, and Internships and Advanced Seminars. The internships and advanced seminars offer students the experience of job shadowing public health professionals in their employment settings and gaining real world experience in the field and its subspecialties.
Master’s degree courses include: Biostatistics, Principles of Toxicology, Applied Epidemiology, and Special Topics in Public Health, Seminars, and Independent Study.
Those seeking doctoral degrees in public health are also expected to take educational courses similar to those listed above and additionally will be completing research in a chosen area. These students are also heavily involved in instruction at the lower levels of the university’s programs.
Once all of the educational steps are completed, the next step is to apply for the national certification exam. This exam is administered by the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) on behalf of the CEPH. Scheduling is available online at www.publichealthexam.org and after your information is processed you will receive a scheduling permit that will allow you to set your time and location to take the exam. There is a non-refundable fee of $350-$400 that is due upon registration.
No licensure exam or fee is required as public health professionals are not currently licensed in the state of New Hampshire.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Public Health Professionals in Manchester, Nashua, East Concord, Concord and Derry Village, New Hampshire may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Concord Hospital, Wentworth Douglas Hospital, Catholic Medical Center and Cheshire Medical Center.
