Cardiac sonographer training in New Jersey can be found in colleges and universities throughout the state, and also online. Most training programs in echocardiography last two years and culminate with an associate degree. Coursework one will take in a cardiac training program includes anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and computer applications. A great amount of cardiac sonographer education programs also have a practical focus; that is, a period of time dedicated to putting the student in the field to gain practical experience. This will not only help the student of cardiac sonography learn much needed job skills, it will also provide networking opportunities he or she can use later when searching for a job in echocardiography.

Although New Jersey’s laws do not mandate certification for graduates of its cardiac sonography training programs, it is highly recommended and may soon be mandated by law. The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) recommends certification as a standard for all cardiac sonographers, to ensure quality care, reduce health care costs and maximize patient safety. The ASE also recommends enrolling in a program that is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Graduation from one of these approved, accredited programs allow you to sit for registry exams with the two credentialing organizations (CCI and ARDMS) without any further requirements needing to be met.
