How to Become a Gerontologist in New Jersey - NJ

While the State of New Jersey division of Consumer Affairs does issue licenses regarding many professions and occupations, at this time there is no license requirement designated specifically for gerontologists. However, there are a number of educational institutions and programs that do offer the opportunity to attain a gerontology certificate. A basic gerontology certification in New Jersey is a significant professional credential that demonstrates that someone has pursued a course of study that provides a knowledge base that enhances the career of those who are devoted towards serving older adults and their families.

Currently there are several certification paths in New Jersey enabling someone to become a gerontologist. For example, a basic gerontology certificate can include workshops and Webinars. The human process of aging is covered, with focus on the social and biological theories of aging, including the normal, abnormal and dysfunctional changes and the changing social contest of life that affects seniors.  Policy and economic considerations; handling loss of functionality, environmental changes, and coping mechanisms; framework and tools for evaluating and assessing the elderly; and case management that takes into account cultural and ethnic factors are usually studied. In addition, sensory impairments and the techniques of active listening and reminiscing as a way to communicate with the aged are also typically covered.
