In order to get started in this growing field, you will need to select a long term care school in New Jersey. The decision as to which school to select will ultimately hinge on which particular area of long term care that you decide to get into. Some schools in New Jersey offer programs catered toward the LPN certification, while others have degree programs geared toward the RN certification.

In New Jersey, you can be licensed as a licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), or an advance practice nurse (APN). For each respective level, you will need an education tailored to that specific career. The New Jersey Board of Nursing requires the following levels of education for these long term care professions:

  • Licensed practical nurse (LPN) – 2-year associate degree with passage of NCLEX examination
  • Registered nurse (RN) – 4-year bachelor degree with passage of NCLEX
  • Advance practice nurse (APN) – 4-year bachelor degree with passage of NCLEX examination plus supplemental education in pharmacology

By electing to participate in either an online or campus-based program, aspiring long term care providers in Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Edison, and Woodbridge, New Jersey will be adequately prepared for prosperous careers in some of the state’s largest medical facilities, including Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Bergen Regional Medical Center, Atlanticare Regional Medical Center, and Hackensack University Medical Center.
