The NCBTMB requires renewal of certification every four years with 48 hours of continuing education (6 of these hours must be in ethics) and at least 200 hours of work experience.  These can usually be earned online or through a New Jersey massage school Continuing education hours can be from either approved providers of the NCBTMB or from providers that fill the criteria set by the NCBTMB. Note that in 2013, the hours from non-approved providers will change in that every 2 hours from the non-approved providers will only count as one hour of the total needed to recertify.  Work experience and continuing education hours will be submitted with the recertification packet and the cost of recertification is $125.

The NCCAOM also requires recertification every four years either online or through a new jersey massage school.  As part of the recertification process, massage therapists must complete 60 hours of continuing education, which the organization refers to as Professional Development Activities (PDAs), and a recertification application must be submitted with a $220 fee.  The PDAs required are broken down into categories, in which a certain amount of hours are needed or limited in those categories (for a full list please see the recertification handbook at: http://www.nccaom.org/handbooks/2009_Recert_Handbook-FINAL.pdf).

The New Jersey Board of Nursing, Massage, and Bodywork & Somatic Therapy Examining Committee requires that an application (and fee of $120) for recertification be submitted every two years.  As part of the recertification, current Basic Life Support CPR certification and 20 hours of approved continuing education relating to massage therapy are also required.  For more information on continuing education requirements got to the Board’s regulations 13:37-16:11, that can be found online.
