More and more, the U.S. is moving to electronic records for healthcare. Entering the medical profession in a healthcare support position in health information management as a medical records and health information, with a focus on becoming a medical billing and coding specialist. When a patient in a healthcare setting receives a service, whether it’s a consultation with a physician, an x-ray, a yearly physical or major surgery, medical records that accurately reflect the patient’s history must be compiled and maintained. Medical billing and coding specialists are responsible for accurately coding the procedure and billing insurance companies and government agencies for these services. A challenging specialty in this field, and one that is growing rapidly is cancer registrar or certified tumor registrar (CTR).  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) report “1999-2005 United States Cancer Statistics” contains information compiled by cancer registrars contains data on more than 1 million cancer cases diagnosed in during a period of one year. In addition to coding skills, these professionals are often called upon to run board meetings and give presentations.

Becoming a medical billing and coding specialist in New Jersey

Those in the medical billing and coding field are not required to be licensed by the state of New Jersey, by local government or by the federal government. However, more and more employers want to hire for candidates who have attained professional certification, particularly by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).  Once again, the school and program selected should be accredited by the CAHIIM.

  1. The first step to a career in medical billing and coding is to attain a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  2. Although not required, it would be a good idea to speak with someone already working in the field to learn first hand the day to day duties. Find out if you do in fact find health care interesting, and consider if you are detail-oriented and are able to stay focused on your work.
  3. Next, decide on the type of billing and coding training program would best suit your particular needs.
    1. With a certificate programs, students generally complete the study within a year’s time and go on to entry-level positions.
    2. A two-year associate degree from a community college.
    3. A bachelor’s degree from a college or university. Graduates are prepared to assume management roles in health information.
    4. A long-distance learning course is another option for those who would like more flexibility with their schooling.
  4. It is beneficial if the student can enter into an internship at some point during or after their course of study.
  5. Apply to the AHIMA and take one of the certification exams, such as Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
