How to Become a Medical Technician in New Jersey

Steps to Become a Medical Laboratory Technician in New Jersey

The state of New Jersey requires that labs be licensed according to standards set by the state’s Clinical Laboratory Improvement Service [http://www.state.nj.us/health/phel/clis.shtml]. This includes collecting detailed information on the education and certification of every employee in the lab. Licensing of individuals is not required, but a review of job postings for New Jersey revealed that certification by a nationally recognized organization such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT) is expected. You can be certified by more than one organization and also may have certifications in multiple specialty areas.

Accreditation of MLT programs offered through New Jersey medical technician schools is done by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

Steps to Medical Technician Certification in New Jersey

  1. You should complete an associate's degree from one of the accredited online or campus based New Jersey medical technician schools.  Students may opt to gain the equivalent of 60 hours of coursework emphasizing relevant science courses from a regionally accredited college. In addition, you must meet the specific requirements for each association.
    • AMT certification requires at least 25 semester hours in science and laboratory experience OR an associate degree from and NAACLS accredited medical laboratory technician program.
    • ASCP certification has four different pathways that will allow you to qualify for the certification exam:
      1. Complete an NAACLS accredited program within 5 years previous of applying for the exam.
      2. Complete 6 semester hours each of chemistry and biology and a CLA certification. This path is only available to individuals certified before the CLA certification was discontinued in 1982.
      3. Complete 6 semester hours each of chemistry and biology and successfully finish a yearlong U.S. military medical laboratory training course.
      4. Complete 6 semester hours each of chemistry and biology and have three years of full time experience completed within the previous 10 years.  Two of those years must be with a board certified supervisor.
    • ASCLS certification was conducted by the National Credentialing Agency. However, that agency merged with the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) in October, 2009.
  2. Apply for one or more of the national certification exams offered by the ASCP BOC or AMT.
    • You must be certified to become a member of ASCP. The initial certification exam costs $185 and is valid for three years. Certification must be renewed every three years by following the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP). Membership in ASCP costs $89 per year.
    • The AMT certification exam costs $130. You are required to be a member of AMT. The initial certification is valid for three years and must be renewed every three years through the Certification Continuation Program (CCP).
