Are there educational requirementsin New Jersey for Respiratory Therapists?

Yes, to become nationally certified as a Respiratory Therapist, which is required to become licensed in New Jersey, you must complete an Associates Degree online or through campus-based New jersey Respiratory Therapy schools.  An Associates Degree usually  takes two years to complete and may include the training program within the degree.  While becoming trained to servein the field of Repiratory Therapy, you will encounter courses in mathematics, physics, and therapeutics.  To prepare you for future patients, you will also learn about mechanical ventilation, neonatology, pediatrics, and cardiopulmonary diseases and treatments.  A portion of the training program will be spent as an internship in a hospital setting, where you will assist and treat patients in real situations.  During this time, you will get supervised practicein the field of Respiratory Therapy by taking initial assessments, checking ventilators, and assisting patients in respiratory distress.

Keep the license updated.

Every two years, individuals are required to complete the required amount of Continuing Education units, before renewing the license.  You will need 24 units.  Although it is not necessary to provide proof of completion at the time of renewal, make sure you are prepared to provide proof in the event of an audit.  There is a renewal form and fee as well.  It is a felony to practice as a Respiratory Therapist with an expired license, so make sure you fill out  the renewal form on time!
