New Mexico is a state of cultural and geographic diversity. As one of the Sunbelt states, New Mexico is both a popular destination for tourists as well as an inviting place for those looking for someplace to retire. Along with tourism, the federal government, and mining, healthcare is an important industry for the New Mexican economy and is one of the primary sectors expected to lead the state in generating new jobs.

Among the promising careers in medical care, healthcare administrators design, direct and organize medical care and health services in hospitals, managed care facilities, public health agencies and private medical practices.

Healthcare administration and jobs for medical and health services managers in New Mexico are projected to increase anywhere from 18 to 22 percent in the future, according to statistics from the United States Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration. By 2019, there are two areas where most of the jobs for healthcare administrators probably will be located: 46 percent of the jobs are projected to be found in Central New Mexico, followed by 31 percent around the Northern New Mexico area. Employment within the Eastern area of the state is projected to be approximately 16 percent and seven percent in the Southwestern areas of New Mexico.
