Lactation Consultant Schools in New Mexico - NM

Lactation consultant training in New Mexico requires general health education courses such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition, child development, medical terminology, and sociology, along with specialized coursework in lactation and at least 300 hours of clinical experience. Although not required, it is very helpful to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree as well as licensure in the medical field (many lactation consultants are registered nurses who have received additional training). New Mexico offers many community colleges and four-year universities especially in the larger cities of Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, and Roswell that provide the necessary background courses for lactation consultants.

In addition, hospitals such as Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque and Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, and other clinics and women’s and children’s health centers throughout the state may provide opportunities for obtaining clinical experience.

There are several ways to obtain training to be a lactation consultant. Some candidates may have on-the-job practical experience because of their current occupation. These include nurses, midwives, physicians and dieticians working in maternal-child care. Other candidates begin their training through a more academic approach; still others work directly with a certified lactation consultant or counselor who oversees their lactation education and clinical experience. All options require the educational foundation, special coursework in lactation, and practical experience. Previous experience and educational background will determine which option a candidate should pursue.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Lactation Consultants in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho and Roswell, New Mexico may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the St. Vincent Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital and Memorial Medical Center.
