Licensure from the New Mexico Board of Nursing includes the following levels of long term care: registered nurse (RN), licensed practical nurse (LPN), and clinical nurse specialist (CNS). Remember that all long term care students, regardless of certification type, are required to pass the independent NCLEX examination. The degree requirements in New Mexico for these professions are:

  • Registered nurse (RN) – 4 years of collegiate study in nursing, bachelor degree
  • Licensed practical nurse (LPN) – 2 years of college study in nursing, associate degree
  • Clinical nurse specialist (CNS) – 5 to 6 years of collegiate study in nursing, master degree, registered nurse status, supplemental education
