It is not necessary to be certified in the state of New Mexico to be employed as a medical assistant, but certified medical assistants face a stronger career outlook if certification is sought after completing training through a New Mexico medical assistant school. There are several national certifications to choose from, the most recognized being the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). Another well known certification is the American Medical Technologists (AMT) certificate, which offers many of the same benefits as the CMA.

The Certified Medical Assistant certification is the most distinguished national certification for medical assistants, and is offered by the AAMA. The National Board of Medical Examiners confers with the AAMA on the examination requirements for this certification, making it a highly respected certification. Many employers have begun to request that prospective medical assistants obtain the CMA certification and training through medical assistant schools in New Mexico before applying for a position with them.

Members can also access important updates to legislation regarding the medical assistant occupation as well as using the service to network among other professionals. New Mexico offers its own branch of the AMT which can be found at http://www.nmssamt.com.
