In addition to the initial medical assisting training in New York, there are continuing education requirements. Certified Medical Assistants (AAMA) must recertify their credential every five years. Recertification can be accomplished by passing the AAMA recertifying examination or by acquiring 60 recertification points. At least 30 points must come from AAMA-approved continuing education units (CEUs). Overall, the breakdown of recertification points is:

  • 10 points in administrative topics
  • 10 points in clinical topics
  • 10 points in general topics such as professional communications
  • 30 points from any combination of the above three categories

Medical assistants used to be trained on the job, however, today’s employers are seeking more highly educated personnel. Most employers expect applicants to have completed Medical Assisting training in New Mexico before being hired into a medical assistant position. Many community colleges offer programs that run 1 to 2 years in duration, with the typical length being one year.

New Mexico offers many options for students looking to complete a program in medical assistants. A comprehensive list of schools and programs can be found at http://www.citytowninfo.com/employment/medical-assistants/new-mexico.

National certifications like the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) require completion of a program at an accredited school, making it important to pursue post-secondary education. New Mexico does not have any state requirements for these certifications at this time, however, they can play a vital roll in obtaining a position, especially for those just beginning their careers.
