Find the right school for you
In order to work in nurse informatics in New Mexico you must have certification. The American Nurses Credentialing Center offers a credential (RN-BC). This certification is offered to those who are already certified, licensed registered nurses (RN). This is a specialty for those in the nursing field that want to get into the administrative, record keeping portion of health care (computerized record keeping).
The American Nurses Credentialing Center has several eligibility requirements. Those interested must:
- Have a valid RN license in the state of New Mexico
- Have practiced for at least two years as a RN
- Have a bachelor’s degree in nursing or in a related health care field
- Have completed 30 hours of continuing education in informatics
- Have one of the following:
- A graduate degree in nursing informatics with 200 hours of supervised clinical in informatics
- 2000 hours of nursing informatics experience in the last 3 years
- 1000 hours nursing informatics experience in the last three years with at least 12 credit hours in informatics from a graduate program
If all eligibility requirements are meant then the application must be completed and a fee of $390 submitted. A photocopy of RN licensure and official transcripts from schools where degrees were earned must be submitted with the application and fee. If approved, then the credentialing exam is taken and must be passed before the credential is given. Every 5 years, credential holders must recertify by submitting a renewal application with a $350 recertification fee and complete 100 hours of continuing education. Also in order to work in New Mexico in nurse informatics and to maintain RN-BC certification, you must maintain your New Mexico RN licensure. To do this you must renew and complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years. While there is not a specific New Mexico nursing informatics certification; the ANCC credential counts as such.
