New Mexico has many nursing programs available all over the state. So those interested in pursuing nurse informatics can begin with their bachelor’s degree in nursing (it is required to be a registered nurse, RN, to receive nurse informatics credentials). Next step is to obtain a graduate degree. There are two universities in New Mexico that offer graduate nursing degrees with a focus in nursing administration. In these programs, students will attend classes in advanced nursing, but there are also classes that teach students about health care policy and health administration. Classes are also focused on the financial side of health care.
There are New Mexico nurse informatics programs at this time, but there are many online universities that offer nurse informatics programs in which a Master’s in Health Informatics can be earned. This makes it possible for someone interested in the field to work in New Mexico as a RN and receive the experience necessary to earn a informatics nursing credential (RN-BC) and get the necessary graduate level education. These online nurse informatics programs will teach the student about the US health care system and how it functions along with the legal aspects involved. Many of the classes will focus on health informatics, how it has evolved and how to use the newest technology in order to keep electronic records that follow federal laws of confidentiality and allow health care organizations to work with insurance companies (billing, submitting claims, etc). Completing these programs will help prepare students for the certification exam and to work in the field.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Nurses in Health Informatics in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho and Roswell, New Mexico may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the St. Vincent Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital and Memorial Medical Center.
