The New Mexico Physical Therapy Board (NMPTB) has differing educational requirements depending upon the applicant’s graduation date. Applicants who graduated prior to January 1, 2002, can obtain a license with a Bachelor’s Degree in physical therapy or a certificate from a program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Students who graduated after January 1, 2002, require a post-graduate physical therapy degree from an institution that is also accredited by CAPTE. This degree is typically a Doctor in Physical Therapy (DPT).

In order for a physical therapist to renew a license, the applicant must complete 30 continuing education credits (hours) every two years. Completed coursework needs to be approved by the NMPTB to be accepted as continuing education credits. Courses approved by the American Physical Therapy Association are automatically accepted by the NMPTB. Carryover of credits into the next renewal period is not allowed under the NMPTB. Exemptions are allowed for service members of the armed forces reserves or the New Mexico National Guard who are called to active duty. Upon proof of an active duty requirement, the applicant will not be held responsible for failure to earn continuing education credits; therefore, an active duty service member’s license will not lapse for the applicable renewal period. The NMPTB reserves the right to audit selected license renewals. Upon receiving notice of an audit, the applicant must produce proof of successful completion of the credits required for the renewal period. Failure to provide verification of compliance will result in non-renewal of the applicant’s license.
