A variety of New York CNA training programs are offered through school districts, vocational and technical schools, online schools, and community colleges. Most programs are designed to prepare students to pass the New York State certification exam and incorporate clinical and work experience. Courses may include an orientation on health careers as well as the study of medical terminology, infection control/medical asepsis, geriatrics, nutrition, anatomy/physiology (overview), vital signs, and first aid. Training programs may also offer nursing labs, clinical experience, and workforce preparation.

School districts may also offer training approved by the New York Department of Education to help students prepare for the Nurse Aide Certification exam. This program includes 100 classroom hours and work experience in a nursing home. Admission to these programs requires an application form with references and a personal letter of intent as well as a physical exam prior to the clinical part of the program. Adult programs usually provide students with classroom instruction, lab practice and industry internship.  Most instructors are health professionals committed to helping individuals attain their goal of entering the health profession. 

Students studying to become a certified nursing assistant in New York receive training in all areas of patient care, including care plans, administering medication, vital sign interpretation and emergency procedures. CNAs are qualified to provide patient care and allow nurses to focus on specialized care. Certified nursing assistants take courses in body structure and function, food and fluids, patient safety and infection control.
