According to New York State law, there are two acceptable paths to meeting the educational requirements for becoming a dental assistant:

  1. Complete a one-year (24 credit hour) educational program including biomedical sciences, professional dental assisting, clinical training, courses on oral and written communication modes and at least 200 hours of experiential clinic time. There are a number of dental assistant schools in New York offering curriculum consistent with these requirements.
  2. OR complete an alternative educational course that has been approved by the New York State Education Department along with 1000 supervised hours of work experience.

New York Dental Assistant Continuing Education Requirements

As a dental assistant in New York, you must reapply and pay to renew your license every three years. You will be required to show proof that you meet eligibility requirements including the appropriate number of continuing education credits.
