The following steps should be carefully observed as you pursue a career as a dental assistant.
  1. Graduation from high school or the equivalent of a high school diploma is the first important step you can take to become a dental assistant.
  2. Completion of a dental assisting program that has been approved by the New York State Education Department.
  3. Provide proof of an infection control course, which you should cover within a formal educational program, as listed above.
  4. Pay the $103 licensing fee, which includes your initial license and the three-year licensing period. Payment should be submitted with your application to take the licensing examination. You will be notified by mail if you have met all the requirements to take the board examination.
  5. Complete a CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) course and/or check to see that your CPR card is up-to-date.
