How to Become an EKG Tech in New York - NY

EKG Technician Certification in New York

The state of New York does not require any special license or certification to work as an EKG Technician; however, becoming trained and certified increases your chances and opportunities for employment.

  1. After graduating from high school, search for a school that offers EKG training. This program will likely be about 10 to 12 weeks. You will earn a diploma or certificate after you graduate.
  2. Take a test to become nationally certified as an EKG technician. While the state of New York does not require any certification for EKG technicians, some employers prefer certified techs to non-certified ones. A few certification organizations are preferred among those who employ EKG technicians. You might want to check with your school or potential employers to see which certification they prefer before signing up to take any test.
  • Options for certification include the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), which provides certification exams that qualify you as a National Certified ECG Technician (NCET) upon passing.
  • Registration fees are $90 for students and $135 for those who are not students.
  • The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) also offers certification in EKG Technology to New York residents. The exam fee is  $55. After taking the exam, it will take six to eight weeks to receive results. Information can be found at www.aspt.org.
  • You can become a Certified Cardiograph Technician (CCT) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).  These computerized tests are offered at Pearson VUE testing centers across the country, including at the following cities in New York: East Syracuse, Utica, Endicott, Watertown, and Albany.  Upon registering, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) by mail and have 90 days to schedule your test.
