LPN School in New York - NY

Educational Foundation for a New York Licensed Practical Nurse

The educational path for becoming a licensed practical nurse (LPN) is similar in all states.  LPNs in New York can prepare as early as high school by completing courses in basic sciences and mathematics.  New York LPNs are required to pass NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses) licensing examination.  Before this exam can be taken, a state-approved practical nursing program through accredited online or campus based New York LPN schools must be completed.

New York currently has many options for those interested in LPN training programs.    Most are offered through technical and vocational schools or community and junior college while other programs may be available through high schools, hospitals, colleges and universities.  A high school diploma or a GED equivalent required for entry into most LPN programs.  Some programs require applicants to obtain CPR and/or First-Aid certifications prior to enrollment.

A year or less is all it takes to complete most LPN training programs.   Training programs combine classroom instruction and supervised clinical practice (patient care).  Content covered will include patient care and basic nursing concepts.  LPNs will also take the following courses in an educational training program

  • Chemistry
  • Anatomy
  • Physical Education
  • Biology
  • Physiology
  • Pediatrics
  • Obstetrics Nursing
  • Pharmacology
  • Psychology
  • Nutrition
  • Medical-Surgical Nursing
  • First Aid
  • Child Growth and Development

An associate’s degree or LPN certificate, and possibly both, will be issued upon completion of an accredited licensed practical nurse training program.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring LPNs in New York, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers and Syracuse, New York may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Presbyterian Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Brookdale Hospital.

Continuing Education for Licensed Practical Nurses in New York

Practical nurses in New York are licensed for life by the state unless their licenses is revoked or suspended by the Board of Regents.  However, in order to legally practice, LPNs must renew their registration with the state every three years.  A renewal request is typically sent to LPNs four months before the beginning of the new renewal cycle.  Online registration renewal is accepted.

Every four years, LPNs in New York must complete three contact hours of course work or training in infection control and barrier precautions.  This includes, “engineering and work controls to prevent the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis B virus (HBV).”  These guidelines are set by the State Board of Nursing.  Proof of such a course is required with each registration renewal.
