Medical Assistant Certification in New York – NY

After completing an accredited program through a New York medical assistant school, most decide to take the CMA Certification Examination offered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). The exam tests skills in three basic areas:
General medical knowledge, including:
- Medical terminology
- Anatomy and physiology
- Psychology
- Medical/legal guidelines and ethics
Administrative skills, including:
- scheduling appointments
- managing medical records
- billing procedures
Clinical skills, including:
- basic principles of infection control
- using and maintaining medical equipment
- taking medical histories
- patient preparation
- collecting and processing specimens
- preparing and administering medications
- giving basic first aid
Passing the exam allows the use of the Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA) credential, which is recognized by employers in all states.
Another route to certification is to become a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through the national examination offered by American Medical Technologists (AMT). Only graduates of accredited medical assistant schools in New York are eligible for this exam. The areas covered are very similar to the AAMA exam. Passing the exam allows the use of the credential Registered Medical Assistant (AMT). The RMA credential is recognized by employers in all states.
