New York Medical Technician Educational Course of Study
A recent survey by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, published in March 2009, found that 38% of clinical laboratories had difficulty finding qualified medical technicians, with the highest vacancy rates found in outpatient clinics and high-volume testing labs. This lack of qualified technicians is further complicated by high retirement rates of technically trained baby boomers and the increased use of medical services by aging baby boomers. Laboratory professionals are not being trained fast enough to meet that need.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that there were 151,000 medical technicians in the US in 2006. Staffing requirements from 2006 to 2016 are projected to grow faster than average with an expected need for 46,000 more medical technicians by 2016. In New York, there were 9,930 medical technicians in 2006, and that need is expected to grow to 10,760 by 2016, an 8% increase. Openings for medical technicians in New York are expected to be about 230 per year due to industry growth and normal turnover. Continuing Education Requirements/Licensure Renewal
Registration must be renewed every three years and currently costs $120. The ASCP Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) is required of all individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004. The CMP must be completed, documented and submitted with a $75 fee at least two months before the three-year certification expires or your certification becomes invalid. The CMP for clinical laboratory technicians consists of a minimum of 36 points, which must include blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, safety, and may include other areas of specialization. Points can come from a variety of sources—continuing education courses, college coursework, competency assessments by employers, completion of advanced certifications and numerous other professional development sources.
