While experience does play a factor in determining salary in this career field, there are also changes occurring in the medical profession which are likely to impact the future of medical transcription. One of these changes is the use of speech recognition technology. At the present time, only about 22% of medical professionals are using a speech recognition engine to capture their dictation; but that number is expected to increase as physicians look for ways to make documentation more accurate, efficient, and accessible by medical professionals nationwide.
It is certain that this change will affect the way that documentation has traditionally been done. Essentially, medical transcriptionists will be making a switch to medical editing roles, where they can edit the document that the speech recognition engine produces. However, because this technology is far from perfect, the medical community is going to rely heavily on qualified MTs who can use their medical expertise to perfect the medical record. This will likely result in a greater financial potential for medical transcriptionists in New York.
