Many New York colleges and universities offer informatics as a major or specialty in a nursing master's degree program. Programs cover health care, information systems, computer science and research. Students typically gain practical experience with nursing informatics in a health care setting in a practicum at the end of the course. Acceptance in a master’s degree program in New York usually requires a bachelor's degree in nursing, from an accredited nursing school and a New York Registered Nurse (RN) license.

Nurse Informatics Licensure, Certification in New York

To be licensed as a registered professional nurse in New York State, applicants must be of good moral character, at least 18 years of age, meet education requirements, and complete coursework or training in the identification and reporting of child abuse offered by a New York state-approved provider. Candidates must also apply and successfully complete the NCLEX examination developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and administered by Pearson VUE.

Candidates must submit an application for New York licensure and the $143 fee and first registration fee to the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Schools can be asked to verify an applicant’s education directly to the NYSED. Applicants will register with Pearson VUE to take the NCLEX examination. To register for the examination, applicants will need the program code for their nursing education program that is listed in the NCLEX Candidate Bulletin. Candidates may register for the examination online at www.vue.com/nclex or by calling 866-496-2539.

The American Nurses’ Association Credentialing Center (ANCC) offers advanced training and Board Certification in Nursing Informatics through a computer-based examination. Candidates may apply throughout the year. Tests are administered during a 90-day window at a time and location convenient for the applicant. These certifications must be renewed every five years.  There is not a specific New York nursing informatics certification; instead it all is done through the ANCC.
