New York Physical Therapist Continuing Education

The state of New York expects and mandates that all practicing physical therapists maintain a minimum number of continuing education hours per renewal period, or they will not be given a renewed license.  The renewal period runs for three years and thirty six hours (50 minutes=1 contact hour) are the required number necessary in order to satisfy this requirement.  Hours are prorated, depending on when in the renewal period you received your license and may all be completed in one calendar year.  Several options exist to achieve these hours, including attendance and/or presentation at a seminar or conference, publication of an article in a peer reviewed journal, and courses taken towards completion of an advanced degree or certification.   Each type of contact hour is placed in a category and limits are placed on how many hours can be earned in each category.  This is further detailed and explained on the New York State Department of Education Office of the Professions website www.op.nysed.gov/ptceapplicantinfo.htm. 

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Physical Therapists in New York, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers and Syracuse, New York may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Presbyterian Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Brookdale Hospital.
