The dental field is growing all over the nation and the demand for professionals to work within this industry is at an all time high. Two of the most demanded professions include those of dental assistants and dental hygienists. Dental hygienists are expected to be in even higher demand as this field is expected to gain 30% in the workforce annual during the same time period. North Carolina is a great place to pursue a career in either dental assisting or dental hygiene.

How to Become a Dental Hygienist in North Carolina

  1. First and foremost, a high school education and diploma (or its equivalent) is a must if you want to pursue a career as a Dental Hygienist.
  2. Job Shadow a practicing dental hygienist as you will gain valuable insight into the intricacies of the profession
  3. Choose and enroll in a two-year Dental Hygiene education program.
  4. Gain CPR certification or make sure your CPR card is on file and up-to-date. You will need to maintain CPR certification as a dental hygienist. Contact North Carolina's local branch of the American Heart Association to determine your CPR certification status or get help with becoming certified.
  5. The national board examination is given in multiple parts and you must apply to take and then pass both the written and clinical portions of the examination.
  6. Once you have passed the national board examination, you will then need to take the state board examination to become a registered dental hygienist in North Carolina.
