Just as there are many opportunities for long term care jobs, there are many opportunities for long term care education in North Carolina.

To work as a registered nurse in North Carolina, you must be a graduate of an approved school of nursing and pass either a state or national examination. Licensed practical nurses must graduate from an approved practical nursing course and pass a state or national examination. Nurse aides must complete a basic educational course and pass a skill-based examination. If one of these occupations interests you, there are dozens of nursing programs in North Carolina, granting degrees at the diploma, associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s level.

Most nursing programs do not have a specialization in long term care, but you can take related classes in fields like gerontology or long term care management to improve your qualifications. Though most long term care nursing jobs do not require additional certification, you may want to consider becoming certified in a specialized field in order to demonstrate your additional qualifications.

To work as a nursing home administrator or other long term care facility administrator, it’s a good idea to take courses in areas like long term care management and geriatric care management. You can find such courses offered at campus-based educational programs in North Carolina as well as online. Though not always required, a solid background in the fundamentals of long term care management will help you get a head start on an exciting career in long term care.
