The North Carolina Board of Nursing establishes standards for nursing education programs to make sure that graduates have the education needed to safely and competently practice nursing. Most board-approved training programs offered by North Carolina LPN schools last for three semesters. These include classroom and clinical experiences for patients of all ages in a variety of settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and in the community. The program readies students to be LPNs practicing under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Graduates of programs of practical nursing education receive a diploma and may then take the NCLEX-PN. 94% of those who graduate from LPN training facilities in North Carolina pass the NCLEX-PN on the first try.
Entry-level competence for new LPNs is usually accomplished through successfully completing the approved training program and passing the NCLEX-PN. Continuing competence, however, is also required of LPNs. LPNs are expected to carry out a self assessment of his or her practice, individualized to the LPN's specific area of practice or interest, and develop a plan for maintaining competence. The Board of Nursing provides assessment tools for LPNs to use to maintain continuing competence. These tools are available at their website (www.ncbon.com).
