According to the North Carolina Chronic Disease Management Collaborative, the 4 top leading causes of death in North Carolina are heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Currently, about 500,000 residents are struggling with diabetes, while another 500,000 residents have histories of heart disease. Each year, 40,000 North Carolina residents are diagnosed with cancer. While these statistics may be heartbreaking, they are actually the driving reality that creates jobs for medical coding and billing professionals. So long as a need exists for medical care, there will be a coder or biller assigning codes and ensuring efficient reimbursement.

In May of 2009, the medical coding salary and medical billing salary in North Carolina was found to be $30,750. Although this figure did include the salaries of beginners in the field as well, it was found that the top 10% of coders and billers in North Carolina were making some $45,960 every year. The bottom line is that the average salary is only a starting point to greater financial potential.

Listed below are some of the average income figures across North Carolina:

  • Asheville: $29,430
  • Burlington: $30,810
  • Durham: $38,820
  • Fayetteville: $33,720
  • Greenville: $30,020
