If a medical tech holds MLT (AMT) certification than they will be expected to complete 45 points of continuing education credit. Credits must be completed every three years when the certification is renewed. In most cases a point is the equivalent of one hour of continuing education credit.  Points are earned through employment, postsecondary coursework, professional education, writing an article for a peer-reviewed journal, instructional presentations, participation in professional boards or working committees and other AMT approved professional development opportunities.

The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science
ASCLS offers a Professional Acknowledgement for Continuing Education program, which allows medical technicians and other medical professionals to enroll, participate and record their continuing education hours. Courses are available in webinars, teleconferences, and self-home studies on paper or computer. There is a plethora of courses that allow participants to work at their own pace.  The North Carolina state chapter of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science offers continuing education opportunities as well.

Re-certification continuing education requirements are also called certificate maintenance requirements or maintenance of credit. No matter what the name, continued learning after certification is necessary. The rest of the points may be earned in a lab specialty or any other related area of interest.  The ASPC offers opportunities for lab techs to earn CMLE credit by taking self-assessments/self-studies, eLearning, meetings/conferences, and teleconferences
