Employment Information

Medical technicians support the work of medical technologists in a variety of settings including hospitals, colleges, physician offices, research facilities, diagnostic and medical laboratories and private clinics. In March 2009, an American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) survey of clinical laboratories reported that nationally medical technologists are the most difficult staff members to replace with medical techs coming in second.  The reason for this difficulty was increased competition for qualified staff. Thus, medical tech education and experience are highly valued by employers. According to the ASCP the employers with the highest vacancy rates for medical lab technicians were private clinics, reference laboratories, and outpatient clinic laboratories.
