Phlebotomy Education in North Carolina - NC

Steps to Become A Phlebotomy Technician in NC

While the state of North Carolina doesn’t require phlebotomy technicians to have a degree or certification, most phlebotomy technicians find that it helps them find jobs.  This trend is likely to grow as cutbacks in other industries will result in a larger pool of potential employees.

Most of today’s phlebotomy technicians in North Carolina work in hospitals or labs, but a growing number are working for insurance companies and large corporations to offer testing to prospective employees and random or routine screenings for existing employees.

The first step to becoming a phlebotomy technician is to learn about the field to see if it is a good fit. There are three primary requirements for becoming a phlebotomy technician: Knowledge of scientific areas such as anatomy, physiology, infection control and safety procedures; physical abilities such as stamina, hand/eye coordination, and adequate hearing and vision to perform the job; and emotional skills such as stability, empathy and compassion.

The second step is to find the right training program.  There are courses offered through accredited colleges, community and technical schools, and even programs through the American Red Cross.  Most of these programs offer students both coursework and lab experience.  Admission requirements and fees for these programs vary, so it is important to find one that is right for you.

The third step to being a successful phlebotomy technician in North Carolina involves certification.  While North Carolina state law doesn’t require certification to work as a phlebotomy technician, some employers prefer to hire certified phlebotomists.  There are a few professional organizations that offer exams to qualify for certification and websites that offer study guides and practice tests. One of the best recognized is the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, or ASPT.

After following these first three steps, the final one is to find a job and start a new and rewarding career!
