Pursuing a career in the dental field is a wise move these days, especially dental support roles such as dental hygienists. This field is expected to grow by almost 30% by 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. North Dakota is home to around 550 dental hygienists.
How to Become a Dental Hygienist in North Dakota
- Research dental hygiene school prerequisites and take preparatory classes. High school classes in anatomy and mathematics will prove helpful.
- Apply to an accredited dental hygiene school or program in North Dakota. Currently there is only one North Dakota dental hygienist program. It can be completed in two years and includes an eight week summer session between the first and second year.
- Complete a CPR certification course.
- Graduate from approved dental hygiene program in North Dakota.
- Pass the national board dental hygiene exam, a regional clinical exam, and a North Dakota state written exam.
- Apply for a dental hygienist license with the North Dakota State Board of Dental Examiners. The application must be received in the board office 30 days prior to the next board meeting. You will now be considered a registered dental hygienist in North Dakota.
