Find the right school for you
There are different ways to receive cardiac sonographer training in North Dakota as the state has several community colleges as well as public and private four-year universities. Some sonographers choose a certificate program through a vocational school, others have an associate’s degree from community college, and still others complete four-year programs. Training programs for cardiac sonography include academic studies plus clinical experience. Academic courses cover basic topics such as anatomy, basic math, computer skills, and medical terminology. Focused courses cover topics such as basic life support and pharmacology, ultrasound equipment, medical ethics, legal information, and of course cardiovascular anatomy and abnormalities. Cardiac sonographers often choose to specialize in one of three specific types of cardiac ultrasound technologies: invasive or noninvasive cardiovascular sonography or noninvasive vascular technology.
Credentialing for cardiovascular sonographers in North Dakota is voluntary, although it is expected and often required by employers. Becoming a registered cardiac sonographer (RCS) involves taking an examination after your formal education is complete. The exam covers topics such as general policies and procedures, pathophsyiology of cardiovascular diseases, and how to perform an echocardiographic examination. Once a credential is earned, registered cardiac sonographers must maintain their status by completing a certain number of continuing educational units. A typical number is 36 CEUs every three years. RCSs must also submit completed ethics statement and pay a fee to renew their certification.
