Lactation consultants are professionals who specialize in assisting nursing mothers and infants. They teach, advise, and clinically assist breastfeeding mothers by knowing the anatomy, physiology, and other physical considerations, as well as infant development and problems that both mother and child may have during feeding. To become a professional lactation consultant in North Dakota, one must have educational credentials and practical experience.

There are many colleges and universities that offer the courses necessary to obtain lactation consultant training in North Dakota. Typical coursework includes medical terminology, chemistry, sociology, anatomy, and nutrition. Many lactation consultants are nurses, so their educational background may cover much of what they need. In addition to general coursework, lactation consultants must take classes which specifically deal with the topic of human lactation and breastfeeding.

Practical experience is also a requirement of lactation consultant training programs in North Dakota. A person training to become a lactation consultant must have 100-300 hours of clinical experience under the guidance of a certified lactation consultant. This extensive preparation enables the consultant to best serve clients who may face a wide range of frustrations and fears when breastfeeding, especially with a first child. Because the training to become a lactation consultant is so extensive, it typically takes two to five years to become certified.
